⚖️ Creating Deli Scale Items

If you’re using a deli scale, you’ll need to set up your items correctly so they send to the scale and display the right information on the labels.

,

Note: This article covers setting up items to send to the scale. If you’re looking for information on decoding random weight barcodes, please see our Decoding Random Weight Barcodes article.

To create a deli scale item, start by creating a new item and filling out the relevant details as outlined in the article How to create an item. If you’d like, you can also choose to set a specific item number for your deli items.

A deli item can be either a Weighted Item or a QTY Enforced Item — make sure you select the option that applies.
👉 Don’t worry about entering the APN just yet — we’ll cover that in a later step.

Next, head to the Deli Scale tab.
This is where you’ll set up all the information that will be sent to your deli scale.

Basic Deli Scale Setup

If you just want to send the deli item to your scale without adding any extra information, here’s all you need to do:

Setting What to do Notes
Send to Scale Set this to Yes Enables sending the item to the scale
PLU for Scale Enter a PLU (usually the item number works well) Do not exceed 5 digits for the PLU
Scale Location Set to Location 1 (or your required scale location) You can create different locations if needed (click the 3 dots to rename or manage locations). If unsure, submit a ticket in our support portal.

If you’d like to include additional information on your deli scale labels, you can use the extra options available on the Deli Scale tab. Here’s what each option does:

Expiry options 🗓️

If you’d like to include more information on your deli items, you can use the options under Expiry options to customise the label:

  • Use By Text — set the text that will appear for the use by date.

  • Packed Text — set the text that will appear for the packed date.

  • Use By Dates — configure how use by dates are calculated and displayed.

  • Packaging Tare — set the packaging tare weight (if required).

⚠️ Note: Only certain deli scales can print this information. If you’re unsure, please submit a ticket in our support portal.

Tick options and Warning ⚠️

There are several tick options available to control how your deli item is printed on the scale label:

  • Non-Weighted Item — tick this if the item is sold by each (rather than by weight).

  • Packed Date — tick this to display the packed date on the label.

  • Dual Label — tick this if you wish to print nutritional information on a second label. Only use this option if your item has nutritional information available.

  • Warning — enter any important customer warnings here (eg. allergy information such as “Contains Peanuts”). This text will appear on the printed label.

Enter the ingredients for the item in the Ingredients field.

  • You can enter up to 50 characters per line , and up to 700 characters for the last line.

That’s it for the additional Deli Scale options!
Once you’ve finished entering all the required details, you can move on to creating the APN for your deli item — this ensures it will scan correctly at the register.

Creating the APN 🏷️

Next, you’ll create the APN so your deli item will scan correctly at the register.

  1. Head back to the Details tab in the item view.

  2. Click Add under the APN section.

Add APN Deli Scale.mp4

How to format the APN:

To keep the APNs consistent with the in-store deli barcode standard, the barcode should start with 02.

Build your barcode like this:

  • 02

  • Followed by the 5-digit PLU you entered earlier

  • Then six zeros to finish it off

If your PLU is not 5 digits, add leading zeros to make it 5 digits.

Example:
If your PLU is 123, your APN will look like this:
02 00123 0000000200123000000

APN RW

⚠️ You may notice that the preview strips the first zero and adds a random digit at the end — this is normal!
The last digit is called a check digit and is automatically calculated. The barcode will still scan correctly.

🚀 You're All Set!

That’s the final step for creating your deli scale item!

You’ll now need to send the item to the register and send it to the deli scale so it appears in-store.
